Closed Session Covers Incompatibility Offices Act

A memo could be released as soon as Friday by Berrien County officials regarding whether or not certain county commissions are in violation of the Incompatibility Offices Act. Complaints have recently been made regarding Commissioners Jim Curran and Debra Panozzo. While serving on the County Commission, Curran recently resigned his seat on the Brandywine school board, even though he was cleared of violating any rules. Panozzo serves both the County Commission and Southwest Michigan Planning Commission. Ray Kirkus of New Buffalo gave his opinion Thursday during public comment.

During closed session Thursday Commissioners heard from Corporate Council Donna Howard on the issue. It seems neither commissioner is breaking the rules. Howard's memo and her findings are expected to become public once a few date changes are made.
