The city of South Haven is warning people to stay off the ice on Lake Michigan. South Haven Police and South Haven Area Emergency Services note people are going out on to the lake to take pictures and sled, but the shelf ice is very unstable. As temperatures keep warming up, the ice will become more unstable even as snow cover makes it appear to be sturdy. Emergency officials note the shelf is often hollow underneath, and when it breaks people will plunge into the freezing water of Lake Michigan. Police add walking on the shelf ice and the pier aren't illegal, but they're urging people not to do it.
