The Boys and Girls Clubs of America National finals will include a teenager from Benton Harbor. Jasmnika Newbern will travel to Washington D.C. in September. She won the Regional Youth of the Year award this week in Chicago, where Grammy Award winner Patti LaBelle presented the award. With the award came a $10,000 scholarship from Tupperware. She says the Boys & Girls Clubs helped shape her sense of self. Newbern graduated from Benton Harbor High School as the Salutatorian of the class of 2014 and will attend Michigan State University this fall. As a member of the Club since the fifth grade, she was instrumental in creating and coordinating last years Peace Walk and Peace Rally. The walk happens on the last day of school, which nationally has been proven to be the most violent day of the year. Newbern says "I am who I am today because of the lessons I learned at the Boys & Girls Clubs." The Youth of the Year journey begins locally when Club staff nominate youth who rise above their circumstances and make positive changes in their lives.
