Benton Harbor City Commissioners this week voted to close the Bobo Brazil Community Center through the winter. Interim City Manager Darwin Watson recommended at a recent committee meeting that the facility be shuttered in order to save money. He says that it's badly in need of repairs, and Monday's action by the city commission will only be temporary:
The Bobo Brazil Center needs repairs to its heating system, and Watson says that the water and sewer expenses for the building are also high:
He said at a previous meeting that the heating bill for the facility one month last year reached eight-thousand dollars, and he thinks closing it down through April fifth could save tens of thousands. The facility is currently used for a handful of community programs, which Watson says can be moved elsewhere. The city will also pursue grants or other funding options to pay for its repair at a later date.
