Berrien County Votes To Hold Off On Road Commission Takeover

The Berrien County Road Commission has officially received a seven-month reprieve from the possibility of being taken over by county government. The County Board of Commissioners voted Thursday to delay a takeover vote until October, but is not eliminating the possibility of taking action before that time pending the outcome of a federal investigation.

That's County Commissioner Mack Elliott. Road Commission managing director Louis Csokasy gave an update to the county board several weeks ago regarding changes that have been made since he took over last fall. After his hire, the county gave Csokasy several months to try to turn around an organization that had become disfunctional and rife with a poor work environment. Over a dozen non-union employees stepped forward with a list of grievances in June 2012 that led to an overhaul of the Road Commission Board, the ouster of the managing director at the time, and two other managers.
