Berrien County To Vote On Life Rings, Consider Pier Jumping Ban Thursday

Life rings and a pier jumping ban are on the agenda for the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday morning. A public hearing will be held at the start of their 10:30 a.m. meeting in St. Joseph on a proposed ordinance banning pier jumping. Six people have drowned since 1986 while jumping off the piers in St. Joseph. Last month, Commissioner Mack Elliott noted a ban could include ticketing those who dive and survive, and called a ban a systematic approach to public safety.

The county has been under pressure for months to put life rings on the south pier, and the St. Joseph City Commission will also look at adding more life rings to the north pier at Tiscornia Park. St. Joseph has one life ring and a police call box at the base of the pier.
