A bright red "Notice of Seizure" from Berrien County now adorns the front door of what used to be Casey's Bar & Grill in New Buffalo. The business closed in December, and several scheduled hearings on the battle between building owner Bob Athey and restuarant owner John Bertuca have been delayed. Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski says the business owes just $150 in back personal property taxes,
The notice prevents anything from being removed in order to protect the county's interests. Witkowski says his office has not yet received any of that money. Casey's first opened in 1955 after Gerald "Casey" Jones Jr. purchased what used to be Krycka's Tavern on Whittaker Street. Athey has said he would like to have a business back in the space by the summer tourist season.
