Berrien County corporate counsel Donna Howard says no county commissioners are holding incompatible offices. In particular, she is referring to Commissioner Debra Panozzo and Commissioner Jim Curran. Panozzo also serves on the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission, while Curran is stepping down from his post on the Brandywine school board. The county's lawyer looked into whether or not the commissioners were holding incompatible offices as was the case several years ago when Izzy DiMaggio had to step down from the Road Commission when he was appointed to be Hagar Township Supervisor. Howard says for Panozzo and Curran, there are no contracts between the county and their other organizations, and there are no competing interests. She adds if there were to be, simply abstaining from voting or discussion would not eliminate the conflict, and a resignation from one of the posts would be required.
