Berrien County residents who are planning to run for the County Board of Commissioners have until Tuesday to get their paperwork submitted to be on the ballot. There will be at least two primary elections in August. One is in District 6 where incumbent Republican Jeannette Leahey of St. Joseph Township is being challenged by Bernd Krebs of Royalton Township. In south county's District 11, first-term incumbent Jim Curran of Niles faces Richard Briand. Incumbent Democrat Andy Vavra of Three Oaks is set to face Republican Ray Kirkus of New Buffalo after beating him in 2012. The 5th District, which includes the city of St. Joseph and St. Joe Township, is open with the announcement by Commissioner Cathy Thieneman that she will not seek reelection. So far, David Yardley and Bill Chickering have announced their intentions to run for that seat.
