Berrien County will be consolidating it's Health Department offices to a new location on Napier Avenue in Benton Township near both I-94 and the US-31 bypass. The County Commission approved in a 7-2 vote purchasing the former Schroeder Motor Mall property for $1.9 million, despite the objections of three south county residents. They included former County Commissioner Don Ryman of Buchanan, who said the location is too remote for those from his area, Niles, New Buffalo and other regions.
Others called for the consolitation and any future new county building campus to be built in Berrien Springs, something County Administrator Bill Wolf disagrees with.
Commissioners Mack Elliott and John Klimek voted against the deal. Elliott called for more time to study the purchase, saying the county wasn't being pressured to buy the land.
