Berrien Co Pier Jumping Ban On Hold


Plans for a county-wide pier jumping ban have been put on hold. This week, the Berrien County Board of Commissioners chose not to move forward on the proposed ordinance to make pier jumping a civil infraction, following the city of Saint Joseph's announcement of its opposition to the law last month. Commissioner Jeanette Leahey says that while she's disappointed that the ban appears to have died, the fact is that without Saint Joe's cooperation, it wouldn't have been practical:

Leaders in Saint Joe publicly spoke out against the proposed ban, saying that it would be too much of a burden for local police to enforce. Leahey says that the committee behind the ban will now look at alternatives, like signs to be posted at area piers, warning people of how dangerous diving off of them can be.
