Benton Township Continues Cutting Costs

Benton Township will save more than $240,000 over the next five years thanks to a new contract with their police command officers. The deal increases the amount of money those covered by the contract contribute to their health insurance premiums from the current 5% to 11% this year, 17% in 2014 and 20% in 2015 and beyond. Township Supervisor Elden Piontek talked to WSJM News about the change.

Small pay raises are also included of 2% in 2013 and 2014 and 1% for every year from 2015 to 2017. Employees will also pay more money toward the pension fund. Last month, the township approved rehiring retiring fire chief Dan Durham and police chief Vince Fetke as contract workers with lower pay and no benefits, with those moves saving $1 million by 2019. No decision has been made on whether or not to ask voters for a 1.5-mill property tax increase, but Piontek says they're hoping if they do have to put it out there, voters will see they're doing what they can to cut costs.
