Be Safe With Fireworks

With the July 4th fireworks coming up in St. Joseph, South Haven and throughout the area, police are putting out reminders to be safe. Michigan State Police Community Service Trooper Maurice Burton joined WSJM's Brenda Layne to talk about fireworks safety, and said while the laws have changed in the state to allow more fireworks that can explode, there are still things that are illegal.

Burton hopes people will be vigilant.

He says things like cherry bombs and M-80s remain illegal in Michigan, though they can be purchased in other states. Other tips include being sure little kids are dressed properly when using things like sparklers, which do have the potential to cause a fire if not used right. The fireworks that make any sort of a bang are only legal the day before, the day of, and the day after national holidays. Most communities also have time restrictions, and won't allow them after a set time at night.
