Back-To-School Shopping Underway

It's already back-to-school shopping season. The National Retail Federation's Bill Thorne says starting the sales in July has become normal, as stores want to get a jump on hauling in what has become some big dollars.

According to Thorne, technology sales were up dramatically last year from the back-to-school rush. He's not expecting a repeat of that in 2013, as many parents are following a "replenish and reuse" model of shopping where they buy the big ticket items one year, and make them last. Overall, back to school spending is slightly down this year, while costs are up. The average amount spent for an elementary school student is $161; for middle school, it's $198; and for high school, it's $330. College students are spending over $500 to get ready for the new academic year.
