An Amtrak train was stuck on the tracks near Niles for hours yesterday (Sunday) due to snow and freezing temperatures. Amtrak Train No. 353 stalled on the tracks about 45 minutes southeast of Niles around 4 p.m. Both engines were frozen. As of midnight the train had not moved. A passenger recounted that the train started to slow down a few miles past Kalamazoo. The engineer then stopped to check the engines. She said they were told one of the air pipes that deals with the brakes, was not working correctly, then later were told there was so much ice in both of the engines that they couldn't actually get to the pipe to fix it. Still waiting on an update this morning. Meanwhile Amtrak has announced that Pere Marquette Train 371 is canceled for today as are Wolverine Trains 352 & 353.
