Agema Getting Slammed On Social Media For Anti-Gay Comments In Berrien County

Michigan Republican National Committeeman Dave Agema is getting ripped on the Facebook pages of Grand Rapids TV stations for his comments last week in Berrien County concerning gays and lesbians. Agema was speaking at the Berrien County Republican Party's Holiday Reception on party unity when he also attacked the LGBT community by saying gays want free healthcare because they're dying between 30 and 44 years old. OutCenter board of directors chairman and Republican Brian Savage was deeply offended.

Savage lost the GOP primary in 2012 for the state House seat currently held by Dave Pagel. Inside Michigan Politics editor Susan Demas tells WSJM News no one who is familiar with the stance of the former state Representative from Grandville should be surprised by Agema's remarks.

Like Savage, Progress Michigan Executive Director Lonnie Scott is furious.

Other GOP members say the comments as initially reported by the "Herald Palladium" over the weekend were taken out of context and accuse the reports about what was said as being part of an agenda. The remarks have captured the attention of websites like Wonkette and the Huffington Post. Our newsroom has reached out several times to state Representative Al Psholka and state Senator John Proos for their reactions to what they heard last week.
