This is the time of year when infections of Lyme disease increase, and the hazard is a particular concern here in southwest Michigan, Berrien County Health Department spokesperson Gillian Conrad tells WSJM News Berrien County has a much higher rate of Lyme disease infections than the rest of state. We’ve got the terrain that ticks love.

“The ticks that carry Lyme disease, those black-legged ticks, can be found in wooded areas, brushy areas with tall grass and leaves,” Contrad said. “We see them along the shoreline, hanging out in the dune grass.”

Conrad tells us you need to take steps to prevent tick bites if you’re going to be walking around in the woods or dunes this time of year. She recommends walking toward the center of trails and away from vegetation and also using insect repellent that contains DEET. After going for a hike, she recommends checking your body for ticks and showering. You can find a wealth of information about ticks and Lyme disease right here.
