Robotics World Competition Heads To Detroit

Later this week, some 40-thousand students, mentors, and family members are descending on downtown Detroit for the FIRST Robotics Championship at Cobo Center and Ford Field. Nearly 700 qualifying teams from around the world will start competing Wednesday. Students will build and operate robots to complete a task which increases in difficulty at each level. Co-Director Patti Poppe is President & CEO of Consumers Energy.

“Having all of those guests come to Detroit, many for the first time, from all over the world, it creates an image. They’re going to be surprised, they’re going to have a great time, they will see what’s happening in Detroit and I think a lot of people will want to be a part of it once they’ve come here see what we have going on.”

Detroit will host the championships through 2020 and it’s projected to have a 90-million dollar economic impact over the three years.
