Deputies Cleared Of Wrongdoing In Crash

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has cleared two of its deputies of wrongdoing in a crash this month that killed three this month.

The crash happened the morning of April 15 during a chase. Police say four suspects broke into the Black Arsenal Gun Store in Stevensville and made off with some guns. They were spotted later, and that’s when the chase began. It ended on M-139 north of Rockey Weed Road when the SUV the suspects were in crashed.

The sheriff’s department tells us the two deputies involved were placed on administrative leave following the incident so an internal review could be conducted. Upon completion of the internal investigation, which included a review of the in-car video of the incident, the sheriff’s department has found no wrongdoing on the part of the two deputies. They have returned to work.

Another investigation, by Michigan State Police, continues. Its results will be forwarded on to the Berrien County Prosecutor when it’s finished.
