The Benton Harbor City Commission has officially recognized Benton Harbor High School Tigers Basketball for its state championship win this year. At this past week’s meeting, Mayor Marcus Muhammad read a resolution granting a key to the city for the team.

“Be it resolved that the city of Benton Harbor wishes to formally recognize the 2017-18 Benton Harbor Boys Varsity Basketball Team for their historically successful season,” Muhammad read.

It was a packed house as the Tigers shook hands with commissioners and learned Muhammad has declared 2018 the Year of the Benton Harbor Tigers. Tigers Coach Corey Sterling told WSJM News the community support has been great.

“It’s big,” Sterling said. “The city’s still celebrating. Everywhere we go they’re proud of us, and they’re proud just to be a resident of Benton Harbor.”

Sterling told commissioners he’s aiming for another championship next season. He said the key to the city is the highest honor the city can give, so it is special for the Tigers to receive one.
