Volunteers Cleaning Up Litter

The Michigan Department of Transportation is gearing up for this year’s first Adopt a Highway cleanup event this month. Spokesperson Dan Weingerten tells WSJM News all kinds of organizations throughout the state sign up to pick up trash along designated stretches of road via Adopt a Highway.

“There’s typically a few in almost every county,” Weingarten said. “There are a lot of places where there’s some competition for these segments. Groups might wait a while before one of them becomes available.”

Weingarten tells us the groups commit to clean up trash along their stretch of road for two years at a time. To date, more than 2,800 groups have adopted more than 6,300 miles of state highway, collecting around 65,000 bags of trash each year and saving the state an estimated $5 million. The first Adopt a Highway trash pick-up of the year will start this Saturday and run through the following Sunday. To find out more, go to Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway.
