Upton Not Surprised By House Speaker Announcement

The announcement on Wednesday from House Speaker Paul Ryan that he will not seek re-election was no surprise to Congressman Fred Upton. The St. Joseph Republican tells us in a statement Ryan’s family has long watched the House Speaker commute to Washington for work from Wisconsin, noting Ryan sleeps in his office. Upton writes, “He has been a force in advancing our landmark, bipartisan 21st Century Cures legislation.” Upton also credits Ryan with helping to usher through tax reform legislation. Upton says he respects Ryan’s decision to retire from the House. Upton’s full statement is below.

“Today’s announcement is not surprising. His three teenagers and wife have seen him commute to D.C. virtually every week of their lives and he has slept nights in his office all his days. I was among those who urged a very reluctant Paul to step up and accept the nomination to become Speaker of the House because he is a bridge builder within our caucus. He has been a force in advancing our landmark, bipartisan 21st Century Cures legislation. His long-term priority – making our country more competitive by lowering the tax rates for all – has now been enacted. His family wants him back and I respect his decision and will always be grateful for his friendship and positive leadership.”
