State Senator John Proos will receive a special honor from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office this week. On Friday, he’ll get the Shining Star Award, which is given out to groups or individuals who work to promote organ donation. Proos gets the honor because he introduced Lauren’s Law in Michigan, which requires Secretary of State office staff to ask customers if they want to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry when applying for a driver’s license. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says the number of adults on the registry has more than doubled, from 27% to 63%, since 2011. Proos will get his Shining Star Award on Friday at the Niles City Council Chambers.
