Driver Fees Go Away In October

Relief is coming to Michigan residents who owe money in the form of driver responsibility fees. Michigan Secretary of State’s office spokesperson Fred Woodhams tells WSJM News the fees will be totally a thing of the past come October 1.

“She has continually worked to have them removed,” Woodhams said. “We’ve been chipping away at it, and I think we finally have them fully repealed beginning October first of this year, they will be dine and over with completely.”

This news comes after Governor Rick Snyder this week signed a bill doing away with the fees. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says the driver responsibility fees were an unnecessary burden. They were created in 2003 to plug a budget hole and punish drivers for certain offenses, but were often so high drivers didn’t pay them. More than 300,000 Michiganders owe more than $600 million in those fees.
