Michigan residents who want to board domestic flights or enter federal facilities will have to get upgraded I.D. cards by October 1 of 2020. Michigan Secretary of State spokesperson Fred Woodhams tells us the U.S. Department of Homeland Security this week issued a ruling on how the state can comply with the federal REAL ID law.
“Michigan residents will be able to use their driver’s license or I.D. cards for all purposes through October 1 of 2020,” Woodhams said. “We’re pleased with that. If we had not met this compliance, people would not be able to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.”
Woodhams says you’re encouraged to get the REAL-ID license the next time you renew. It won’t cost you anything, but you’ll need a birth certificate or a passport to get one. People who don’t apply for a REAL ID-compliant license or I.D. card when they renew will receive a standard one with “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” printed on it.
