The U.S. Coast Guard once again reminding everyone to avoid going out on ice this winter. Petty Officer Lazaro Lopez with the St. Joseph station tells WSJM News if you do wind up on the ice for some reason and fall through, here’s what to do.

“Put your thumbs right to your chest and army crawl and kick your legs as hard as you can” Lopez said. “The minute you can get on the ice shelf, roll. Roll toward that thicker sheet of ice. Roll toward land where you came from.”

Lopez adds most drownings are caused by people gasping as they first hit the water. He says the Coast Guard’s message remains “no ice is safe ice.”
