(East Lansing, MI – AP) – A graduate of Michigan State University who relied on a scholarship in the 1960s to help complete his college education is giving $5.3 million gift to the school’s College of Engineering. The East Lansing school announced Tuesday that the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, will use cash and estate planning for the gift so endowed scholarships may be offered. The school says the donor grew up on a Michigan farm and is a successful entrepreneur.

The university’s President Lou Anna K. Simon says in a statement that the gift comes “at a critical time when greater investment is needed to build endowed scholarships.” The gift supports Empower Extraordinary, a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign for Michigan State that the school launched publicly in 2014.
