BH Schools Looking To Make Pool Available To Public This Summer

The community pool at the Charles Gray Community Center in Benton Harbor could become a busy place this summer, as Benton Harbor Schools Superintendent Dr. Shelly Walker says she’s working to find a way to keep it open to the public. Walker says the pool is in good, working order. It’s just a matter of finding a partner who can help maintain it and provide safety.

“To help manage the rental or use of the pool, and to help provide oversight to ensure safety and to ensure that we’re able to manage the costs of the pool,” Walker told WSJM.

Walker says work has been going on to get the pool back open for the public and for district students this summer since before she came to town. She adds this month’s drowning of 17-year-old Travonne Shannon off the pier at Silver Beach has increased the urgency to make the pool available for the summer. Her hope is to get everything up and running before the hottest days of the season get here.
