A standoff between a Van Buren County man and Michigan State Police is over, and he is in custody. The suspect and police exchanged fire several times Tuesday, with the last shots fired shortly before 7 p.m. Police said early this morning the man had been taken into custody and was not injured. No officers were struck by gunfire during the shots that were volleyed back and forth. State Police Lieutenant Angel Ouwinga explained how it started when a detective went to the house near South Haven around 10:30 yesterday morning to question the man as part of an investigation.

“The subject then went back into his residence, came out with a long gun, came back outside and did proceed to fire one shot,” Ouwinga said.”

Police say they were able to talk to the suspect over the phone during the standoff yesterday, but he refused to cooperate.
