The U.S. House has approved legislation authorizing military spending for the next year. Congressman Fred Upton says the National Defense Authorization Act, along with legislation for veterans, received bipartisan support last week.

“This is an authorization, so it allows for the building of planes and ships and so on, and it’s to the tune of nearly $600 billion,” Upton told WSJM. “The V.A. medical bill, which includes some base building is for a much small amount, but it did include about a 5% increase for veteran services.”

Upton says the defense bill includes a pay raise for troops and money to pay for their training. The legislation also blocks the government from transferring Guantanamo detainees to United States soil, and bans the display of the Confederate flag at veterans cemeteries.
