Work To Replace Territorial Culvert Progressing

The Berrien County Road Commission is making progress on the repair of a collapsed culvert on Territorial Road in Bainbridge Township. The culvert, located on Territorial over Blue Creek, fell apart last month, closing down the road. Road Commission Managing Director Louis Csokasy says crews spent the past five weeks diverting the water out of it and removing the concrete and steel.

“We’re finished with that work,” Csokasy told WSJM. “We’ve actually exposed the collapsed culvert, and found a number of interesting things down there that we never would have expected to find.”

That includes the original culvert structure, made out of logs, which goes back to the 1800s. Csokasy says the proper permits have been secured to replace the culvert, which will be done in the coming months. The replacement structure will be larger than the old one. Csokasy estimates the project could take three to four months.
