Detroit Teachers Not Happy With Bailout Package

The package of legislation passed this week by the state House to fix the financial problems of Detroit Public Schools is being blasted by teachers. Interim President of the Detroit Federation of Teachers Ivy Bailey calls the bills “mostly despicable.” House Kevin Cotter says they could look to their own leaders.

“The reason why we are where we are is failed leadership for decades, at the municipal level and at the city level, and we have Republicans coming together, solely Republicans coming together, to clean up this mess,” Cotter said.

The $500 million plan includes a $33 million loan to help transition DPS to a new school district. The package is less than the $700 million Governor Rick Snyder had proposed. Some estimate it will actually cost $800 million to fully bail out Detroit Public Schools.
