FEMA’s recent assessment of the emergency response plan at the Palisades nuclear plant in Covert is being reviewed by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department. Lieutenant Bob Kirk tells our partners at WKZO AM 590 several drills were held looking at how prepared power plant employees, county agencies and the state of Michigan are if something goes wrong at the plant.

“The concern of something happening there is very minimal,” said Kirk, adding “if something does happen there, it will be a very big situation.”

He adds the results of the assessment are good.

“They did not find any reason to be concerned with anything we have done,” Kirk said, adding that despite the passing grade, they will still review and update response plans as needed.
