A Benton Harbor man charged in the murder of an eight month old boy in February will undergo a competency exam. 30-year-old Brandon Beshires was in a Berrien County Courtroom Wednesday for a pre-exam conference. The Berrien County Prosecutor’s office says his attorney requested a competency exam, which the judge allowed. Beshires will now be tested at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti, which could take 6 to 8 weeks. He’s charged with 1st degree murder in the death of Carter Donovan. Beshires was supposed to be caring for the boy while his mother was at an appointment, but instead, the baby died from trauma to the head. The prosecutor’s office says no additional court dates have been set, pending the outcome of the competency exam.
