Berrien Road Commission Completes Radar Tests Of Chikaming Twp Culvert

The Berrien County Road Commission has completed ground penetrating radar tests of a culvert on Red Arrow Highway slated for replacement this summer, and found it’s in good enough shape for the project to be delayed until August. The commission received a slew of complaints from Chikaming Township businesses upon announcing its original plan to close Red Arrow all summer for the project, and this month agreed to bump the work back. However, that was contingent on the radar tests. They were done Wednesday, and the road commission’s Michael Juengling says all appears well. Still, they’ll keep an eye on the culvert all summer.

“We’ve taken survey measurements on the height of the pavement, and I believe they’re going out every week and checking that,” Juengling told WSJM.

Juengling says if the culvert shows signs of imminent collapse, they’ll shut down the road, but for now, the project is still set for mid-August. The work will mean the closure of Red Arrow Highway between Three Oaks Road and Warren Woods Road to replace the failing culvert near Cherry Beach Road. Road commission engineers fear the culvert will fall apart if it isn’t replaced soon.
