More than seven thousand gallons of gasoline are still being cleaned up by a Niles tanker company after a crash early Thursday morning in Cass County. The sheriff’s department says a tanker driven by 60 year old Charles Edwards, of Berrien Springs, left the road on a curve at M-60 and Pine Lake Street just before 3 am.

Brenda Lintz, a resident who lives near the scene of the accident says it’s not the first time an incident has occurred near the intersection.

“You do have to be careful around this corner,” Lintz said. “If you take it too quick, especially if it’s slick, it could be dangerous.”

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, as police say Edwards knew the area well and was an experienced driver. They’re looking into whether he had a medical issue.

The gasoline spill caused by the crash led to the entire area being evacuated. Several fire departments responded to the scene, and didn’t get M-60 back open until mid afternoon Thursday. As of press time, Pine Lake is still closed.
