Police agencies around Berrien County are working to make sure they’re trained to deal with active shooter situations in public locations. On Wednesday, Michigan State Police, Benton Harbor Public Safety, and Niles Police were all at Benton Harbor High School to simulate how they would respond to an active shooter. MSP Lieutenant Mike Dawson.

“It could be a Columbine-type situation, it could be the San Bernardino if the officers had arrived on scene when the terrorists were still in the building,” Dawson told WSJM. “It could be a theater shooting, it could be a workplace shooting.”

Dawson says it could be a Columbine-like situation, or a San Bernardino situation — any kid of public shooter. Michigan State Police organize such training events around the county a few times each year with different departments taking part. Dawson noted Benton Harbor High School is on spring break, so no students were disturbed.
