The St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees has given the green light to a renewal of the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport millage. The millage, which works out to 25 dollars for every hundred thousand dollars of taxable value on a property per year, has been in place since 1997, and generates about $300,000 each year for the Benton Harbor-area airport. It’s paid by voters in six area municipalities, and airport officials are hoping to get it renewed for another ten years this August. St. Joseph Township Trustees approved allowing it to appear on the ballot Monday night, and St. Joseph City Commissioners have already done the same. Airport representatives will be speaking with elected officials in the remaining four municipalities in the coming months.
