Benton Harbor School Millages Approved By Voters

It’s not just the presidential primaries that were decided in Michigan Tuesday. Some local matters appeared on the ballot, including in Berrien County. Both of Benton Harbor Schools’ millage requests were approved. Proposal One, which was simply an operating millage renewal, passed 3,108 to 1,351, while Proposal Two, a more complicated “Headlee Amendment Hedge” also passed, but with less of a margin, 2,666 to 1,718.

Elsewhere around Berrien County, voters in Watervliet approved police and fire millage renewals, as well as an operating millage in Baroda Township. Galien Township voters also approved a road millage, while Chikaming Township voters passed a public safety millage. Elsewhere in southwest Michigan, Dowagiac voters rejected a proposal to make the city clerk an appointed office.

Elections officials told us turnout for the day was strong, but likely not record-breaking. In case you’re wondering, Donald Trump won the Republican vote in Berrien County, while Hillary Clinton won the Democratic vote.
