Blue balloons flew up into the sky toward the heavens to honor and remember 8-month old Carter Donovan who died February 19, police say at the hands of 30-year old Brandon Beshires of Benton Harbor.
Carter’s father, Shawn Donovan, says Beshires was a longtime family friend. They played minor league baseball together as kids.
“They all trusted him,” Donovan said. “It’s just something you’d never think of. Nobody would ever think of something like that. It’s just unhuman.”
He says Carter’s mother is struggling.
“She’s horrified by it, she just can’t believe it.”
More than 100 friends and family attended a candlelight vigil for Carter Sunday night at Ely Park in Hartford.
Investigators say Beshires was with the baby for less than an hour while his mother attended an appointment.
Doctors say the baby died of severe head trauma.
“Carter touched a lot of lives, he was definitely an angel.”
Beshires is scheduled to be in court Wednesday. Court documents show he had his own two kids taken away from him in 2010 because of child abuse.
