Legislation Bans Flying Drones Near Mackinac Bridge

Flying a drone near the Mackinac Bridge would be illegal, under a bill being considered by state lawmakers. Flying a drone within 1,000 feet of the bridge would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail or a $500 fine, or both. Bob Sweeney of the Mackinac Bridge Authority says they have some safety concerns about drones flying over the bridge.

“If a drone crashed on the bridge deck and hit one of the vehicles that are driving across the bridge, potentially causing an accident out there,” Sweeney said.

He says they also worry about drones flying near bridge maintenance workers. The legislation is in a Senate committee.
