Free Fishing weekend In Michigan

This is one of Michigan’s Free Fishing weekends, intended at this time of the year to promote the sport of ice fishing. The dates are set long before anyone knows what the weather is going to be like and State Representative Aaron Miller, of Sturgis, says ice fishing might not be that great an idea right now.

“No ice is safe ice in our area right now,” Miller said. “Temperatures above freezing during the day, and below freezing at night make for a weak, honeycombed ice.”

Miller says it would still be okay to fish from shore if you can find open water, but stay off the ice.

“Winter sports are great, but they’re definitely not worth risking our safety,” Miller said.

You don’t need a fishing license this weekend to fish in Michigan. Any other weekend, you do.
