MI Inspectors Training To Better Find Gas Station Skimmers

Thirty illegal skimmers have been found on Michigan gas pumps since last August. The most recent discovery was Tuesday at a gas station in Livonia. Weights and Measures Inspector Sean McGuire is an investigator with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, whose job it is to watch for violations.

“This is why we do what we do,” McGuire said. “This is why we’re out here protecting the customers and conducting these inspections. To protect the consumer.”

In the meantime, state officials are in San Diego this week for a training session in the effort to battle the illegal skimmers, which are used to steal personal information. They scan a customer’s credit card to get the information when the customer uses it at the pump. One way to avoid them is just to pay inside.
