Legislation Would Extend Property Tax Credit To Spouses Of Veterans

A bill to extend Michigan’s property tax exemption for disabled veterans to their spouses cleared the Michigan Senate last week. Currently, disabled vets don’t have to pay property tax on their homes. This bill would extend that exemption to the spouse of a deceased veteran as long as they stay in the home and are not remarried. Bill opponents say the change takes money away from local governments.

“The veterans property tax credit has been in place for just over tow years now,” Hildenbrand said on the Senate floor. “As we’ve reviewed the revenue impacts across the state, we have found that it has been minimal.”

The bill now goes to the State House.
