MI Lawmakers To Craft New Energy Policy

One of the big issues of 2015 for state lawmakers will remain a big issue in 2016: crafting a new energy policy. Both the Michigan House and Senate held committee hearings throughout the year with the House eventually passing a plan out of committee in November. While Democrats in the House were able to lock in a number of changes they wanted they’re still not 100-percent happy with the bill. House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel.

“I think we’d like to see something more substantial and concrete when it comes to renewables, and making sure that Michigan continues to invest in more renewable energy,” Greimel said.

The current plan before the House would encourage – but not require – utilities to source 30 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2025. It also offers incentives to utilities for creating energy efficiency programs and keeps the 10 percent choice market in place. The Senate is still tweaking its plan in committee.
