El Nino Creates A Warm Midwest Christmas

It’s Christmas, but most of Michigan is not covered in white. Meteorologists Mark Torregrossa says its primarily because of El Nino, but also due to a certain high pressure area.

“A big Bermuda high that normally sits out in the ocean,” Torregrossa said. “It’s still strong, and what it’s doing is it’s kind of backing up into the southwest US, and it keeps the cold air up in Canada.”

He says this year’s El Nino could wind up being the strongest one on record. El Nino is a periodical but irregular climate change caused by variations in sea surface temperatures over the tropical eastern Pacific.
