400 turkeys and hams were given away in Benton Harbor on Wednesday, as the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency, the Senior PGA Championship, and Whirlpool teamed up to spread some holiday cheer. Volunteers handed out the turkeys and hams from the back of a truck parked at Dwight Mitchell City Center Park. Whirlpool’s Jeff Noel said it was his pleasure.

“It feels wonderful,” Noel told WSJM. “I want to thank the mayor-elect, I want to thank the PGA. More importantly, I just want to thank everybody that’s here because this is what Christmas is all about.

Those who accepted the offer certainly felt the spirit. Benton Harbor resident Antonette Williams told us the giveaway send the right Christmas message.

“They’re just giving back to the community for people who can’t afford it and who are on disability and Social Security,” Williams said. “It’s very wonderful.”

The idea to give away the turkeys and hams was suggested by Mayor Marcus Muhammad, who approached Whirlpool and the PGA about it. They were glad to oblige.
