State and local police will be watching for drunk drivers Wednesday night, mostly targeting college students who are home for the holiday and celebrating with long lost friends with alcohol. Michigan State Police Trooper Marco Jones of the Lansing post, says Blackout Wednesday rivals other drinking holidays, so police attention is needed.

“There are a lot of holidays where the consumption of alcohol increases, and this is one of them,” Jones said. “This is a festive time of year with people being with their families, and it’s a time of year when we have to be aware of what we’re consuming and how much.”

Jones says patrols will also watch for speeders and those who fail to buckle up, but drunk drivers and buzzed drivers will get most of their attention.
