Movement Aims To Take Thanksgiving Back

A new movement has begun, trying to convince retailers to stay closed on Thanksgiving so their workers can spend time with family. Annie Zirkel, the founder of TakeBackThanksgiving.org, says balance is needed between economics and honoring tradition.

“Even if it comes after Thanksgiving, I would still actually like them for Michigan being bigger than that,” Zirkel said. “I would love Michigan to be a leader in this country to honor both sides of this issue.”

House Resolution 172, introduced in Michigan last month, calls for businesses and residents to respect Thanksgiving and refrain from offering or take part in sales promotions on the holiday. Zirkel hopes it gains traction. The measure was sponsored by Republican State Representative Thomas Hooker, and has 40 cosponsors.
