Hunters Asked To Bring Deer To DNR Check Stations

Deer check stations are at the ready to assist firearms deer hunters throughout the state to make sure their animals are free of disease and to help with future management of hunting in Michigan. DNR biologist Ashley Autenrieth, says most of the state is free of diseased animals, however testing continues to be strongly recommended in Northeast Lower Michigan for Bovine TB, and is mandatory in a nine township area of Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties where Chronic Wasting Disease has been detected. She says both could impact human health, but CWD is more of an immediate concern right now.

Autenrieth says while neither disease has affected animals statewide, it’s a good idea for hunters to know where check stations are and have animals tested. She says the testing also helps the DNR compile statistics on the age and health of deer for future management planning.
